How to Scan, Edit, and Export a Floor Plan
A step-by-step guide to finding Floor Plans in the Albi mobile app, scanning a room with LiDAR, editing your sketch, and exporting it for use in Xactimate.
Step 1: Find Floor Plans in the App
- Open any project in the Albi mobile app.
- Scroll down to the Floor Plans section at the bottom of the feature square.
- Tap it to view existing floor plans or start a new scan. If you don't see the option to start a new scan, your device may not have a compatible LiDAR sensor — refer to the device requirements in Step 1.
Step 2: Scan a Room
- Tap Start New Scan. (insert image)
- Walk around the perimeter of the room slowly and steadily, keeping your device parallel to the walls.
- When you've finished the room:
- Tap End Room to complete that room. (insert image)
- To scan additional connected rooms, continue walking into the next room without ending your session — the app will automatically recognize doorway connections.
- When you're completely done, tap Complete Scan. (insert image)
- The app processes your scan in under 10 seconds and your floor plan appears in the Floor Plans list. (insert video demo)
Typical scan times:
| Step | Time |
|---|---|
| Scanning (per room) | 2–3 minutes |
| Processing | Under 10 seconds |
| Multi-room scan | 5–10 minutes total |
Step 3: Edit Your Floor Plan
After scanning, use the built-in editing tools to refine your sketch.
| Action | How To |
|---|---|
| Open the editor | Tap on a floor plan in your list |
| Select a room | Tap on the room to highlight it |
| Insert walls | Use the wall insertion tool |
| Adjust dimensions | Drag wall endpoints |
| Add a door | Select the door tool, tap placement, then set width, height, and swing direction |
| Add a window | Select Insert > Window, tap placement, then set width, height, and elevation |
| Label a room | Tap the room to add or edit its label |
| Undo a change | Tap the undo button |
Before finishing, double-check that:
- Room dimensions look accurate (±2% variance is normal for LiDAR)
- All walls are present and aligned
- Doors and windows are placed correctly
- Room labels are clear
- Connected rooms show proper doorway connections
Step 4: Export Your Floor Plan
- Open the floor plan you want to export.
- Tap the Share button (export icon). (insert image)
- A JPEG file is generated instantly.
- Use the iOS share sheet to save it to your device.
- To transfer to a desktop:
- Mac: AirDrop to your computer
- Windows: Email it or upload to cloud storage
- To attach it to your Albi project, go to the Files/Folders section, tap Add > Add from Gallery, and select the floor plan JPEG. (insert images)
- To use in Xactimate, import the JPEG as an overlay drawing and trace for accurate estimates.
Note: Floor plans currently export as JPEG. Direct XM8/ESX export for Xactimate is coming in a future update, which will preserve all dimensions automatically and eliminate the need for manual tracing. (asked luke if we should include this)
